I'd Rather Be Free

Lately I've Been:
-putting on red lipstick when I'm home for the night.
-full of nostalgia.
-feeling brave.
-listening to records in the dark.
-eating lots of carrots.
-taking walks instead of sleeping.
-starting books and not finishing them.
-surprisingly satisfied with my work situation.
-buying lots of rompers.
-listening to this song nonstop.

In case you were wondering.

Ode to Kat Greene

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, KATHRYN!!!

Top Five Favorite Things About My BFF Kat Greene:
1. She used to send me texts that said things like, "Come over after class! I made cookies!" (Or enchiladas or cupcakes or I have sparklers or pink champagne). She's fun.
2. She has impeccable taste in everything including movies and music and art and books and all the things that matter.
3. She indulges my really stupid ideas. (Example: Me: Let's go to a night time street festival in a shady part of the city! Kat: OK!)
4. She sings me pretty songs and also likes pinatas and picnics.
5. She's an exceptional long-distance friend/over-the-phone listener/advice giver ('cept sometimes when she's in Target and easily distracted which is totally understandable) and she always know how to calm me down or pump me up depending on the situation.

Bonus:
She's funny and kind and totally inspiring and kicks ass at karaoke but also doesn't make fun of me for sucking.

Love you!
Michelle

I like to judge books by their covers.

Go ahead and judge me, but we all do it. I think the NY Times just did a big article about how electronic readers are making this aspect of book-loving change. BUT today, at my local Barnes and Noble (don't be mad, my areas last indie bookstore went out of business last year...heart breaking.) I picked up a book based on it's cover and it got me thinking about some of my all time favorites....

First, the above copy of Sylvia Plath always sits near my bed and I always, always, always want to pick up that blue book and read it again...

The Vonnegut "V" used to be one of my all time favorite things. It would be an easy way to identify if a cute boy was also smart, if he was reading ANY book with that "V" on it...I knew things would work out just fine.

I've never seen a Salinger cover I haven't loved. Maybe it's because I've never met a Salinger story I haven't loved.

I have an older printing of this that is "pocket sized" and the cover is a skyline at sunset. I think the cover I have would have pissed her off. I like to imagine her loving the above portrait.

That's all for now.

Kat

Femme Fatale

"Andy said I should write a song about Edie Sedgwick. I said 'Like what?' and he said, 'Oh, don't you think she's a femme fatale, Lou?' So I wrote 'Femme Fatale' and we gave it to Nico."
-Lou Reed

G-R-E-A-T Big Star cover of this song (RIP Mr. Chilton):

Also, an incredible version by Nico and the Velvets that I can't embed:

You better watch your step,
