You Better Move Fast

Just wanted to add:
I didn't mean to imply that there are more cool guys than girls. I've just noticed that all of my truly rad girl friends seem to get snatched up by dudes who are much less cool. This is a phenomenon that I've been noticing since high school but that I still don't understand. Anyway, my point is that most of the great girls I know are taken. So guys, you've gotta be quick.

Don't Kill It Before It Starts!

Dear Dudes and Also Girls,

Here's some advice from someone who knows:
Do Not Text While You're On A Date! It will ruin everything. Seriously people, it's not 1999 anymore and cell phones are no longer a novelty. I know you have your fancy new iPhone and you're super popular and, like, everyone wants to talk to you ALLLLL the time but think about etiquette and shit! All you're doing when you text (or WORSE- take a call!) is saying to your date- I'm way more interested in this other person than I am in you. This sucks and will get you no action. If you absolutely must, you best tell your date why it's so damn important. (This is especially relevant on your first, like, five-ish dates with a person.) Don't be rude!

And another thing, cute dudes are everywhere but seriously awesome single girls are a hot commodity. Did you really expect that girl with great style/taste in music/movies/whatever to still be available after you stopped calling for weeks? Get real.

Seriously,
Michelle

this is kind of crazy...

...but I was driving home from LA today and was thinking about things worth blogging about and I decided to write about my favorite Beatle - George - and how when he died my friend Kirsten and I sat in my room trying to talk to him via the glow in the dark Ouija board my godmother had bought me for some holiday.

Then I read the last post Michelle wrote and saw that HER post was about Ouija boards and famous dead people telling her really important things and I felt much less silly about this story I am haphazardly telling.

You see, that night, way back in highschool, Kirsten and I sat on the wood floor of my room, with my giant Beatles poster staring down at us and I cannot remember how it all started but suddenly we were talking to George Harrison (and accusing each other of creating false answers to scare the other one) and I am pretty sure that George told Kirsten to make music.

Kirsten was the first person I was ever in a band with, it was called Packet of Jamn and I will forever and always feel so bad for Kirsten for making her be in that band with me because Kirsten was (and still is) this insanely amazing guitar player and songwriter (and also really funny - I still sometime sings "cannot find service") and I was under the influence of rock and roll glory (even though we wrote very folk-y songs about people at school) and really believed I was a brilliant songwriter at the age of 15 (which, I can unsure you, was not the case). The cool thing is - Kirsten is still writing songs and making awesome music - so, even if one of us WAS moving the Ouija board - George Harrison was right.

Livin in a Van Down by the River...

You guys, Monday was Chris Farley's birthday! I meant to post this earlier in the week but due to my over scheduling my entire life, I haven't had time. Anyway, since Mr. Farley was one of the very best, of course we had to celebrate! In what we assume to be true Farley form, Mallory, Bailey, Jake, and I went to Blackthorn Pub which is the best place in St. Louis to get killer, monstrous, Chicago-style pizza, as evidenced by the picture below (of Bailey but from a separate occasion.)
After raising our glasses in Chris' memory and wolfing down a ton of pizza (well, I'm only speaking for myself there), we headed to Target, got a glow-in-the-dark Ouija board, were warned of evil spirits by a very serious cashier, and went back to Bailey and Jake's to truly channel Chris by watching his "Best of SNL". After that, we contacted him on the Ouija board (Seriously! None of us were moving it, you guys!!!) Bailey asked Chris if there was a God and he said "YES". When Jake said "bullshit", Chris said "NO". So. There's a God. Chris Farley says there is.

Anyway, here are some choice videos!
Relatable.

Chris & Conan circa 1994! This video made my face hurt from smiling too hard.

Another combination of two of my favorite people! Chris & Roseanne!

Happy Birthday, Chris Farley!
Love,
Michelle

i want it to be summer and for missouri and california to be neighbors...

I got a new big girl job which I start in two weeks and is insanely awesome and I am so excited for and it will mean I can move out of my dad's house and have a cute little apartment in an adorable part of orange county (not the real housewives part but the vintage dresses and record stores part.)

This real grown up job means two of my big trips for this year were seriously altered. One - St. Louis to see Michelle (pictured in various summer worthy road trip photos) - has been postponed until further notice and the other - Portland with the boy is going to happen this weekend with very little plan and very little knowledge (on my part - he works there all the time) of Portland at all!!!

All of this has made me crave summer and traveling and road trips and the beach boys and giant sunglasses and summer dresses and and and....so much more. I spent the morning looking through some of my favorite photos that make me happy to live in California and happy for the season to finally change...it's been a really cold and rainy winter here in California - we are normally spoiled with moderate weather all year round - and while I LOVED the rain I just keep wanting to drive to Santa Monica and lay on the sand and drink iced tea and go to Chinatown and try on hats and and and...
Alright, back to the reality of getting organized and trying to balance everything.

Love's Gonna Getcha Down

This week, I painted a bunch of giant lollipops (pictured above) for Willy Wonka. They are AWESOME and the colors are bright bright bright. I've also been working like crazy painting flats for the sets. I'll take pictures of those soon. Anyway, as a result of this veritable Wonka-fest, I've had this song stuck in my head all week. Props to Lauren Wright (also candy-colored, at least in spirit and often in dress) for introducing me to this song long ago.

Love,
Michelle

Read in Bed

Dear Everyone,
Today I took a sick day cause I haven't felt good for like, weeks. This is not normal. I typically have a very hearty immune system and am almost never sick. Anyway guys, it was getting out of control. Luckily I work weird jobs and create my own schedule so it was pretty easy to take the day off. Here are some very important things I did today:
-Slept suuuper late and automatically felt way better
-Took a bath and read The! Greatest! Of! Marlys!
-Ate a grape popscicle and painted my nails to match
-Did laundry verrrry slowly cause walking up and down the steps took too much energy (whadda wimp)
-Made Strawberry-Orange Jello
-Watched Full House and was inspired to find and read Jodie Sweetin's autobiography about her drug and alcohol addiction, Unsweetined (seriously)
-Also watched a not completely shitty show on MTV (!) called The Buried Life. Has this been around forever? Is it old news? I don't know cause I just saw it for the first time but I kind of liked it.
Anyway, I'm feeling much better and tomorrow night I'm going to a T.C. Boyle reading and to celebrate Mallory's birthday.
Love,
Michelle
